The book in an accessible and clear way shows, on the one hand, fundamental and primordial understanding of metaphysics, the basic philosophical discipline donating wisdom-oriented knowledge, and on the other hand it shows the sources of departure from its original understanding which led to the deformation of metaphysics and its negation as the basic philosophical discipline in favor of the so-called modern and contemporary ontologies, in which philosophy ceases to provide understanding of the world and man, breaking through it with their primary task. The book consists of three parts. Author at first presents the history of metaphysics. The second part discusses the history of the creation of a variety of ontology. And in the third he discusses controversial issues providing answers to the title question: metaphysics or ontology? The book, written by prof. Piotr Jaroszyński, head of the Department of Philosophy of Culture at the Catholic University of Lublin, an excellent expert on this issue, is very cognitively valuable and culturally important. It is unique among Polish philosophical works, as well as in the world.
