Tom obejmuje pochodzące ze zbioru Dysput problemowych o prawdzie św. Tomasza z Akwinu kwestie 25 i 26 dotyczące uczuć i zmysłów. Kwestia 26 pt. De passionibus animae (tłum. na język polski jako: O doznaniach duszy; O uczuciach ludzkich; O uczuciach) oraz kwestia 25 pt. De sensualitate (tłum. jako: O zmysłowości; O pożądaniu zmysłowym czyli zmysłowości) powstały podczas trzeciego roku pobytu Tomasza w Paryżu w latach 1256–1259 jako owoc jego pracy akademickiej.

Problematyka władz uczuć i zmysłów człowieka stanowi jedno z ważniejszych zagadnień antropologii filozoficznej. W dziejach filozofii podejmowano różne próby wyjaśniania ich statusu i funkcji: poczynając od negacji sfery zmysłowo-uczuciowej, poprzez jej absolutyzację, a skończywszy na redukcji uczuć do popędów czy namiętności oraz usamodzielnianiu ich i przeciwstawieniu sferze rozumowo-wolitywnej. Tomasz z Akwinu problematykę zmysłów i uczuć włącza w compositum bytu ludzkiego - to cały człowiek doznaje uczuć i posługuje się zmysłami. Z problematyką zmysłowości wiąże się zagadnienie zmysłów wewnętrznych i zewnętrznych, podstaw ich wyodrębnienia i właściwych przedmiotów ich działania oraz niezbywalnej roli, jaką pełnią w życiu poznawczym człowieka. Z kolei z problematyką uczuć jako aktów pożądania zmysłowego wiąże się zagadnienie typologii uczuć, podstaw wyróżnienia uczuć pożądliwych i gniewliwych, ich uporządkowania, miejsca w strukturze władz duszy, a przede wszystkim problem sublimacji, czyli poddania ich kierownictwu rozumu i woli.

Obecne wydanie jest drugim, a pierwszym w serii „Teksty-Przekłady-Komentarze”. Obejmuje oprócz tekstu polsko-łacińskiego także studia i komentarze, m.in. M. A. Krapca, D. Radziszewskiej-Szczepaniak, A. Gudańca, T. Pawlikowskiego, A. Maryniarczyka. W nowym wydaniu dział „Studia i Komentarze” został wzbogacony o teksty I. Deca (Oryginalność i aktualność Tomaszowej klasyfikacji uczuć), M. Czachorowskiego (Autonomizacja uczuć) oraz P. Jaroszyńskiego (Rola cnót w doskonaleniu życia uczuciowego człowieka). This volume includes questions 25 and 26 about feelings and senses, from the collection of Problem Disputes about the Truth of St. Thomas Aquinas. The question 26 entitled De passionibus animae (translated as: On the sensations of the soul; On human feelings; On feelings) and question 25 De sensualitate (translated as: On sensuality; On sensual desire or sensuality) were created during Thomas’ third year in Paris in the years 1256-1259 as a fruit of his academic work.

The issue of the powers of human feelings and senses is one of the most important issues of philosophical anthropology. In the history of philosophy, various attempts have been made to explain their status and function: starting with the negation of the sensual-emotional sphere, through its graduation, and ending with the reduction of feelings to drives or passions, as well as making them independent and opposing them to the rational-voluntary sphere. Thomas Aquinas incorporates the problem of the senses and feelings into the composition of human being - it is the whole person who experiences feelings and uses the senses. The problem of sensuality is connected with the internal and external senses, the basis for their separation and the proper objects of their action and the inalienable role they play in human cognitive life. On the other hand, the issue of feelings as acts of sensual desire is connected with the issue of the typology of feelings, the basis for distinguishing between desire and angry feelings, their ordering, their place in the structure of the soul’s faculties, and above all, the problem of sublimation, i.e. subjecting them to the management of reason and will.

The present edition is the second and the first in the series "Texts-Translations-Comments". Apart from the Polish-Latin text, it also includes studies and comments, among others by M. A. Krąpiec, D. Radziszewska-Szczepaniak, A. Gudaniec, T. Pawlikowski, A. Maryniarczyk. In the new edition, the "Studies and Comments" section has been enriched with texts written by I. Dec (Originality and actuality of Thomas' classification of feelings), M. Czachorowski (Autonomisation of feelings) and P. Jaroszyński (The role of virtues in perfecting the emotional life of man). They introduce the reader to the important issue of human sensual-emotional life in the context of an integral vision of person.
