Książka obejmuje dwie kwestie, 16 i 17, ze zbioru Akwinaty Quaestiones disputatae de veritate, dotyczące prasumienia-synderezy (de synderesi) i sumienia (de conscientia), udostępnione w języku oryginału: łacińskim i w przekładzie polskim, oraz tematyczne studia i komentarze. Tom zawiera również bibliografię przedmiotową, indeks osobowy i rzeczowy.
Przedmiotem pierwszej z dysput jest syndereza, jej status ontyczny (odrębna władza czy sprawność), jej właściwości (omylna czy nieomylna), możliwości jej zaniknięcia. Druga dysputa koncentruje się na sumieniu, jego statusie (władza, sprawność czy akt), jego ewentualnej omylności czy błędności, mocy wiążącej sądów sumienia itd. Obie dysputy dotyczą zatem problematyki niezwykle ważnej dla wyjaśnienia podstaw życia moralnego. Niemniej interesująca jest skomplikowana forma dysput problemowych, będących po dziś dzień niedoścignionym wzorem debaty i analizy kwestii filozoficznych. Obszerna część tomu zawiera tematyczne studia i komentarze do szczegółowych aspektów rozumienia prasumienia i sumienia w tekstach św. Tomasza z Akwinu: roli synderezy i sumienia w działaniu moralnym, ich istoty i wzajemnej relacji, stosunku do prawa naturalnego, „wiązania w sumieniu”. W tomie znajdziemy również historyczny rys początków myślenia moralnego (od Homera do Sokratesa), refleksję nad sumieniem w encyklice Veritatis splendor oraz rozważania o współczesnych paradygmatach absolutyzujących czy negujących sumienie w kontekście nauki Akwinaty o życiu moralnym i jego niezmiennych podstawach.

The book contains two questions, 16 and 17, from the Aquinas Quaestiones disputatae de veritate, concerning pre-conscience-synderesis (de synderesi) and conscience (de conscientia), available in the original language: Latin and in Polish translation, thematic studies and commentaries. The volume also contains a thematic bibliography, and index of persons and concepts.
The object-matter of the first dispute is synderesis, its ontic status (separate power or ability), its properties (fallible or infallible), the possibility of its disappearing. The second dispute focuses on the conscience, its status (power, ability or act), its possible fallibility or erroneousness, the binding power of the conscience judgements, etc. Both disputes concern extremely important problems to explain the basis of moral life. However, the complex form of problem disputes, which are still an unrivaled examples of debate and analysis of philosophical issues, is also interesting. An extensive part of the volume contains thematic studies and commentaries on specific aspects of understanding the pre-conscience and conscience in the texts of St. Thomas Aquinas: the role of synderesis and conscience in moral action, their essence and mutual bond, relation to natural law, "binding in conscience". The volume also includes a historical outline of the beginnings of moral thinking (from Homer to Socrates), reflection on conscience in the encyclical Veritatis splendor, and reflections on contemporary paradigms that absolutise or deny the conscience in the context of Aquinas’s theory of moral life and its unchanging foundations.
